I have been a model railroader for 27+ years, and I have worked on large layouts as well as small ones. My current layout is an 18" x 48" HO layout featuring the grain business of a small, Midwestern town. This layout includes a fiddle yard for staging as well as a sector plate for moving trains on and off the visible portion of the layout.
I discovered on my previous layout (4' x 6') that one does not need a large layout to conduct operations in a prototypical fashion. Micro layouts can (and do) offer realistic train movements with highly detailed scenes. All of this within a space that anyone could manage.
I plan to use this blog to share my ideas on planning, building, and operating micro model railroads.

Tom, I was looking at your layout and even in the small photo you see before clicking I knew that you were using a Sector Plate there on the lower right. For these small layouts that's a great addition and I think I will incorporate that into mine (or at least give it a try). I have an article on this guy building Sector Plates (from a supplement to one of MMR Track Planning books) plus I have some places bookmarked online. Might be a nice intro for the Cartel.
ReplyDeleteEvidently I don't know my left from my right. In the Army in Basic Training we always had these types carry a rock in their right hand so when the Plt Guide called out "Right Face" they knew which way to turn. *sigh*. Guess I need to find a rock!

In ROTC, I recall being told we must salute with the right hand, not the wrong hand.
